BEI worked in conjunction with Village Dock Inc. to help create a man-made island out of dredge spoils for the US Army Corps of Engineers located in Jamaica Bay located off of Broad Channel, NY.

BEI transplanted over 5,000 Spartina hummocks, seeded over 30 acres of Spartina grass, installed over 60,000 plugs of three different varieties of wetlands grasses, and installed over 15 miles of goose control and perimeter fencing. BEI developed a custom seeder that could operate in the wetland conditions of the island. BEI also developed a custom planter that could install the wetlands grass plugs.

After Superstorm Sandy hit in 2012, BEI crews spent over 6 weeks removing debris from the island (including two boats, an entire shed, a jet ski, and more). The crews also repaired and replaced all of the damaged fencing and installed over 40,000 plugs to replace damaged areas.

This project was only accessible by boat, which meant everything (equipment and materials) had to be brought over by barge. Also the entire island became covered in water during high tides. A temporary mound had to be constructed along with a floating dock so equipment and materials could be stored and accessed on site.
